Earlier in the day, Hadiya had reiterated her desire to talk to her husband saying, “I need the freedom to meet the person I love.” She arrived in the steel city on Tuesday to continue her studies at Sivaraj Homoeopathy Medical College as directed by the Supreme Court. College principal G Kannan said that she had applied for admission in her old name and did not submit any documents to prove her name change and so will be called Akhila, her given name.

“She spoke to her husband from my mobile phone. And she is extremely happy being here,” he said.

College correspondent Kalpana said that all facilities have been provided to her. “She is free to socialise with other students in college.

Her husband can meet her after taking permission from her ‘custodian’ (college principal G Kannan),” she said. The college management is likely to approach the SC to clear the confusion on who should be her guardian during vacation.

Hadiya, who was in the ‘custody’ of her parents, was freed by the SC to prosecute her studies. Her parents insisted that she was brainwashed and converted to Islam with a plan to take her to Syria as part of a terror module. The girl stoked controversy after she embraced Islam and married Shafin Jahan, a Muslim youth from Kerala.
