Top Jaish commander killed, one jawan injured in Kashmir

A top commander of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) was killed and a jawan of Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police was injured in a fierce encounter on Tuesday in south Kashmir district of Pulwama, official sources said.

They said security forces and SOG of state police on a tip off about the presence of militants launched a joint search operation at Samboora, Awantipora, in Pulwama at 00:30 hrs late last night.

However, when the security forces were sealing the area, militants opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons in which a SOG jawan was injured.

Security forces further tightened the Cordon in the village, they said adding exchange of fire continued till 04:00 hrs on Tuesday.

However, immediately after the firing stopped, security forces recovered dead body of a top JeM commander. There is also another body in the house which was blasted by the security forces.

Search operation was still going on when the reports last came in, they said adding further details are awaited.

Director General of Police (DGP) Dr SP Vaid in a tweet said that "Encounter going on since last evening in Awantipura district. There was input about presence of 2/3 terrorists near NHW planning to attack convoy. One dead body of terrorist recovered so far, search for others going on".
