The North NDMC will meet on August 30 to discuss the proposal. The area is said to be renamed 'Atal Bihari Vajpyaee Ramlila Maidan' or 'Atal Ramlila Maidan'.

Reacting on the matter, Chief Minister Arvind Kejwial in Twitter post said that renaming Ramlila Maidan will not fetch the Bharatiya Janata Party any votes.

He said BJP should rename the prime minister, instead, if it expects some votes.

Recently, Vajpayee's niece and Congress leader Karuna Shukla accused the BJP of trying to "cash in" on her uncle's death for "political gains" in assembly election.

"I am stunned and pained to see the way BJP is trying to use the name of Atal-ji after his demise for political gains," Shukla said.

Meanwhile, Delhi President of Bharatiya Janata Party Manoj Tiwari has said that there is no question of renaming Ramlila Maidan and that someone is hatching a conspiracy.

"A proposal to rename Ramila Maidan was submitted to North NDMC mayor Aadesh Gupta but any decision to that effect has not been taken," Tiwari said.
