In a statement here, Lakshminarayan said, there is a compulsion to respect the judgement of the Supreme Court, but it is a disrespect to justice and democratic principles.
There is no right for the democratically elected government here, he said. The Apex Court has recognized the ‘authoritarian’ attitude of the central government, he added.
During the course of the case, the Union government has shown the ruler and slave attitude, and that is why it considered Puducherry at par with other union territories where there is no elected government. Centre has even said that this is a dummy government, he added.
The Centre has put an end to the freedom of the people of Puducherry and thrown to winds the promise given by Pandit Jawharlal Nehru at the time of merger that the separate identity of Puducherry would be protected, Lakshminarayanan said.
Lakshminarayanan said it was stated by the central government in the Apex Court that as far as UT is concerned the Lt Governor is the top most authority and there is no need to discuss with the elected government. Such a statement was not made by the French who ruled Puducherry for over 300 years, he added. He said that the ruling of the top court has given the three BJP nominated members voting right like other members.
He said that even if a party was defeated in the elections, the central government could nominate three members from the party and make it a recognized party in the house, is a mockery of the democracy.
He also pointed out that if the three are recognized as BJP members, according to the rule in the peoples’ representative act that a recognized party should secure at least 4 percent of the vote or at least one among the 25 MLAs be elected by the people, is getting defeated.
Lakshminarayanan called up on the people to organize agitation toget statehood for Puducherry to tide over all these problems.
Pondy Assembly to reconvene on December 14
The Puducherry Legislative Assembly will re-assemble on December 14. Legislative Assembly Secretary Vincent Rayer in a notification on Friday said, the Assembly will be re-assembled on December 14 at 10 am. The session is likely to last for a day and is being convened to adopt a resolution condemning the Karnataka Government for its move to construct a dam at Mekedatu across Cauvery river and to press the Union government to withdraw the permission granted to neighbouring State in this regard. It may be noted that the AIADMK and DMK legislators resorted to a dharna inside the chamber of Speaker V Vaithilingam two days ago to press the convening of a special session of the territorial assembly.
