Delhi court orders enquiry after Tihar inmate branded with Om symbol

The undertrial had moved an application before the court through his Counsel about the alleged cruelty and inhuman treatment in jail.

A Delhi Court has ordered an enquiry after a minority 'under trial' inmate was branded with an "Om" symbol allegedly by a Tihar jail superintendent.

The court on Friday issued notice to DGP (Prison) and directed jail authorities to submit a report within 24 hours.

The under trial had moved an application before the court through his Counsel about the alleged cruelty and inhuman treatment in jail by the superintendent Rajesh Chauhan on April 12. He also alleged that he was deprived of food for two days in the jail.

Richa Parihar, Metropolitan Magistrate after hearing the submission on behalf of under trial observed that the allegations raised by the accused were of serious nature and require immediate intervention and said In view of the same, notice is being issued to DGP Prisoner, Head Quarter, Jail number 4 to get a medical examination of accused conducted with immediate effect and also to submit inquiry report.

The court said that necessary CCTV footage should be collected and statements of other inmates be recorded.

It further ordered that necessary arrangements be made to ensure the safety of the accused in jail and he be immediately removed from supervision of jail superintendent to ensure the safety of the accused.
