TN MPs speak of IT layoffs, PUBG deaths in Parl

Members of Parliament from Tamil Nadu on Tuesday raised various concerns in the ongoing winter session of the Parliament, especially over ‘massive’ layoffs in the IT sector and the need to ban the online multiplayer battle royale game PUBG that has led to many deaths.

DMK Parliamentary Party leader T R Baalu said the worsening situation in the IT sector was forcing firms like Cognizant and Infosys to lay off thousands of employees. In such a scenario, the government should intervene and try to bring in a solution to this as the sector employs millions of people and earns foreign exchange in billions of dollars, he added. Baalu also brought up the Coimbatore IT graduates reference where it was reported that thousands have applied for the posts of scavengers, thanks to the lack of jobs , he added.


H Vasanthkumar, Congress, spoke of the danger of children falling prey to the online game PUBG in which they advance to various levels in the game and many have also committed suicide for being reprimanded. Hundreds of lives have been lost due to the game, which he said should be banned in the interest of the future of the country. Children continuously playing the game has also led to a rise in the number of obesity, morbidity and psychological cases.


In the Rajya Sabha, AIADMK member R Vaithilingam demanded introduction ofexclusive superfast trains between Chennaiand Thanjavur in greater frequenciesto cater to the increasing number of commuters on the route.


He complained that the trains operating through Thanjavur were very few in number and most only make a brief stopover. His party member Vijila Satyanand demanded that all the works of poet Subramania Bharatiyar be digitised for the benefit of posterity.


She said the songs of the nationalist poet were known for valour, gender equity and egalitarianism.
