An official delegation from Bangladesh was to participate in two meetings here on Thursday and Friday with Indian water resources ministry officials on sharing of various river waters, excluding Teesta, between the two countries.

But the Bangladesh side has sought postponement of the meetings on some technical grounds, sources said. In fact, the sources said, for the last two months Bangladesh was keen on having the two meetings which is held back to back during the visit.

One was a joint committee meeting and the other was a technical level meeting.

The cancellation of the visit comes on top of the postponement of their visits last week by Bangladesh Foreign Minister A K Abdul Momen and Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, apparently in protest against the attack on Bangladesh over the alleged persecution of religious minorities in that country, one of the grounds for giving Indian citizenship to them under the Act.
