On April 1, exactly a week after the country went into a complete shutdown to flatten the rising curve of coronavirus infection, there were only 1,834 positive cases in India, including 234 from Tamil Nadu – which in turn included just 26 from Chennai. The numbers were going up, but at a clip that did not appear alarming. However, on May 23, with just a week left for the fourth consecutive shutdown to be lifted, the number of cases are rising at a rapid pace, recording unsettling milestones each passing day - Tamil Nadu crossed 15,000 cases, Chennai is just 11 shy of breaching the 10,000 mark, and the country recorded the highest single-day spike in cases at 6,654 to take the overall tally in India toa more than 1.28 lakh. “So far, over 53,000 people have been cured and this takes the total recovery rate to 41.39%. The confirmed cases are also above 1,28,000,” the Health Ministry said.
