OBC Reservation: Centre refuses to grant 50pc medical seats for the current academic year

In its reply to the petition, the Centre has refused to grant the allotted 50 per cent quota for OBC, in medical colleges, for the current academic year.

As an update, in the ongoing legal tussle for the OBC reservation, the Centre replied to the SC that it is neither possible to implement 50pc nor 27pc of OBC reservation for the current academic year.

Earllier, the Tamil Nadu government and various political parties representing the State had appealed the apex court to direct the Centre, to implement 50 per cent reservation for the current academic year, 2020-2021.

The plea was heard on last Tuesday,  by a bench consitituting Justice Nageswara Rao, Justice Hemant Gupta and Justice Ajay Rastogi had ordered the Centre to file its reply on this.

Also, the Supreme Court had refused to pass an interim order in a challenge against a Madras High Court decision to set up a committee to finalise OBC reservation for the All India Quota in non-central medical colleges.

Meanwhile, in its reply to the Supreme Court, the Centre has said it is not possible to implement the 50 pc OBC reservation for the current academic year 2020-2021.
