11 arrested students get bail after massive ganja raid near Chennai college

Police sources said that the magistrate had considered the future of the arrested students and let them off on bail.

CHENNAI: As many as eleven students of a private university near Chennai, who were arrested by the Tambaram city police on Saturday in connection with the seizure of narcotic substances after a massive raid in an apartment complex near the university were let off on bail by a magistrate. A female student and three natives of North Indian states were among the eleven, according to Thanthi TV.

Ten others including a history-sheeter, G Selvamani (29) of Guduvanchery who were also arrested after the raid were sent to judicial remand.

Police sources said that the magistrate had considered the future of the arrested students and let them off on bail.

On Saturday morning, Tambaram City Police conducted a special drug bust operation near SRM University at Abode valley apartment complex in Potheri.

About 1000 police personnel were part of the raid team which searched over 500 apartments and secured half kg of ganja, ganja chocolates, 20 ml of ganja oil, bhang, a smoking pot, seven hookah machines and six kilograms of hookah powder.

Apart from the students and history-sheeter, Selvamani, from whom police seized 2.25 kg of ganja and weapons, police also arrested an Uttar Pradesh native, who ran an eatery near the apartment complex for selling ganja chocolates to the students.

Most of the students from the private university in the area choose to not stay at hostels and stay at the apartment complex. Several residents had complained to the police about the rise in use of narcotic substances by the students to the Tambaram City Police after which Commissioner Abhin Dinesh Modak issued directions. The apartment complex has also witnessed violent clashes among student groups.
