267 kg gold smuggling case: Customs sleuths book YouTuber & Lankan flier under COFEPOSA

The gold weighing about 267 kg was smuggled into the city from various countries and YouTuber Sabir Ali’s gift shop at the airport was used to move the gold out of the airport.

CHENNAI: The Customs booked the YouTuber Sabir Ali and the Sri Lankan passenger under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act (COFEPOSA) on Sunday following a development related to the smuggling of 267 Kgs of gold into the city through the airport.

The gold weighing about 267 kg was smuggled into the city from various countries and Sabir Ali’s gift shop at the airport was used to move the gold out of the airport. After this, Sabir Ali, a Sri Lankan passenger, and seven staff working in the shops were remanded in June.

In a development, the Customs booked YouTuber Sabir Ali and the Sri Lankan passenger under the COFEPOSA Act making it impossible for them to secure bail. The other seven employees of the shop were released on bail.

The customs are also monitoring to capture another suspect linked to the case who had invested 30 lakhs in Ali’s gift shop. The customs had already sent summons to him and would arrest him soon.
