Chennai bound domestic flight suffers tyre burst, lands safely

CHENNAI: A SpiceJet passenger aircraft carrying 85 travellers and six crew members made an emergency landing at Chennai International Airport early today after pilots detected critical technical issues with the plane's tyres mid-flight. The flight, SG-475, departed Jaipur at 2 am and was scheduled to land in Chennai at 5:30 am. All 91 individuals on board escaped unharmed in what officials termed a "miraculous escape."

While en route to Chennai, the pilot noticed abnormalities in the aircraft's landing gear tyres and immediately alerted air traffic control. Fearing a potential catastrophe, if the plane attempted a regular landing, Chennai Airport authorities swiftly activated full emergency protocols. Fire tenders, medical teams, and disaster response personnel were stationed along the runway as the aircraft approached.

At 5:44 am, the Boeing 737-800 touched down under high alert, skidding to a halt on the tarmac. Passengers later described moments of panic as the aircraft shook violently, but the crew's calm demeanor ensured order.

An inspection revealed severe damage to multiple tyres, necessitating replacements. The aircraft, originally slated to operate a new Chennai-Thoothukudi service at 6 am, was grounded indefinitely. This delay stranded 74 passengers bound for Thoothukudi. SpiceJet announced alternative arrangements for them.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a detailed investigation into the incident, with scrutiny focused on maintenance protocols at both Jaipur and Chennai airports. Preliminary reports suggest tyre wear or pressure anomalies, but officials stress the inquiry will determine root causes.

Chennai Airport officials said: "While the landing was executed flawlessly under crisis conditions, such incidents underscore the need for rigorous safety checks."

The incident has reignited concerns over aviation safety standards in India, particularly for private carriers. However, authorities highlighted the effectiveness of emergency preparedness, crediting seamless coordination between pilots, air traffic control, and ground staff for averting tragedy.
