CHENNAI: With only a few days left before the onset of the northeast monsoon, the local body has not desilted the existing stormwater drains, which has led to a reverse flow of filthy water and stagnation at Mettur Colony in Iyyapanthangal.

Residents have complained that the stagnant water mixed with sewage has made the road slush and poses a serious health threat.

“The stormwater drain at VGN Nagar, First Main Road, was widened last year which was not effective. It led to inundation during the monsoon season and when there were mild showers the water would flow in reverse at both VGN Nagar and Mettur colony. The panchayat failed to desilt the existing stormwater drain which is clogged with garbage dumped by the residents,” said Senthil Kumar, a civic activist at Iyyapanthangal.

The water stagnation due to reverse flow from the stormwater drain in the area has been the main cause of worry. It emits a foul smell and is likely to lead to various health hazards. Already, residents in the area are sick and they are concerned about the current scenario.

“If the civic body did not desilt the drain before the onset of the monsoon season, we might witness inundation like the previous years. During rainy days, the entire street will be flooded with rainwater and drainage (sewage) water. The mixing of flow in both drains triggers reverse flow from the stormwater drain. Though multiple complaints have been given to authorities concerned, there has been no inspection or action taken to desilt and clear the street,” said another resident.

When contacted a senior official with Iyyappanthangal Village Panchayat assured steps would be taken and completed before northeast monsoon commences.
