Chennai cop, associate arrested for meth peddling; more cops under scanner

CHENNAI: Within ten days of the arrest of a city police constable for allegedly working in cahoots with methemphetamine peddlers, another policeman was arrested by a special team of the City Police on Friday.

James, who is part of the special team of T Nagar DCP (Deputy Commissioner of Police) was arrested by a team based on investigations with his friend and associate, Surendar who was secured a day ago.

Ten grams of methamphetamine was seized from Surender.

James' role in aiding the peddlers is being investigated.

Both of them have been handed over to the Vadapalani police for further investigation.

Police sources said that constable James has named two other policemen to be part of the network and their roles are being probed.

Ten days ago, R Bharani (32), a 2016 batch police constable was arrested for dealings with meth peddlers.

A special team of Neelankarai Police which busted a meth racket by arresting three persons including a Cameroon national from Bengaluru arrested the constable after finding that he was taking regular payments from the gang.

Police arrested Raghu, a cook, Kannan, a weaver from Arani near Thiruvannamalai and Jonathan, the cameroon national and seized 51 grams of methamphetamine from them.

On reviewing mobile phone contacts of Kannan, police found that he interacted with one number frequently at odd hours and collected the call details and found it to be that of police constable, Bharani.

He was attached to the law and order wing of Aynavaram police station.

Enquiries revealed that the constable failed to alert police about the gang's activities despite knowledge of their crimes.

Further investigations are underway to find if he also tipped off about police movements.
