At central Chennai, regular morning traffic was missing along the interior roads, as schools and colleges remained closed. The market areas in Choolai, Egmore and Pattalam recorded less footfall, as people stayed put at home. However, supermarkets are doing brisk business.

The roads in and around Corporation headquarters Ripon Building, MGR Chennai Central railway station and Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital were busy as usual, but vehicles were plying at a slower pace.

Residents in Egmore also complained of repeated power cuts since Monday night.

A reader who reached out to DT Next updated that all parallel and link roads to Mount Road are inundated. “Use main roads like Mount Road [Anna Salai] and Cathedral Road to the extent possible,” he said.

Overnight rains inundate parts of Chennai on Tuesday

At Kolathur, Chief Minister MK Stalin’s constituency, heavy overnight rains left many parts flooded. The incomplete stormwater drains and the works undertaken by the Electricity Department have made the situation worse, making it difficult for the public to access main roads.

The debris left over from the construction works makes the roads slippery for pedestrians and motorists. Residents say that the condition of the roads has also worsened because of incomplete Metro Water and Greater Chennai Corporation works.
