Form SIT to probe Anna Nagar minor sexual assault case, says SC

Taking cognizance of the state's appeal against the Madras High Court's order to handover the case to CBI, the Supreme Court said that it would keep an eye on the investigation conducted in the minor's sexual assault case.

CHENNAI: The Supreme Court on Monday ordered a special investigation team (SIT) to be formed to probe the sexual assault of a minor girl in Anna Nagar here, according to a Thanthi TV report.

Taking cognizance of the state's appeal against the Madras High Court's order to hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan said that it would keep an eye on the investigation conducted in the case.

The top court noted that the case would be handled by a special investigation team headed by DIG Suresh Kumar Thakur and that the team should comprise two women officials who are not from the state but are a part of the Tamil Nadu cadre.

The apex court judge also directed that an investigation should be conducted on an every day basis and an investigation report be filed at the Madras High Court every week without fail.

The Supreme Court also ordered the Tamil Nadu government to pay the legal fee of Rs 75,000 to advocate Sampath Kumar for appearing on behalf of the child's family.

On August 30, the mother of a 10-year-old girl lodged a complaint at the Anna Nagar all-women police station in Chennai stating that her daughter was sexually abused by a neighbour. However, the inspector allegedly attacked the parent of the victim at the police station in the presence of the accused. Further, it was submitted that the inspector harassed the victim while she was admitted to Kilpauk government hospital and also recorded the victim's statement without the presence of her mother.
