CHENNAI: Following the approval by the State government in late October, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has renamed the Nanganallur Road Metro station to ‘OTA-Nanganallur Road Metro station’, as a tribute to the Indian Army, read the CMRL press note on Monday.

It added that the station was renamed after the State government’s approval on October 22. “The renaming of the station is a gesture recognising the significant role of Officers Training Academy (OTA) located closer to the Nanganallur station,” the statement read.

The decision was taken during the meeting of the CMRL’s high-power committee for its considerations and recommendations, based on the requests made by military authorities, especially on the recent request made by the Chief of Staff (HQ), Dakshin Bharat Area, Chennai. It’s noteworthy that the approval materialised after Army officials agreed to handover the land to CMRL.

“The CMRL had applied for the land early on for Metro Rail construction. But, it was halted after the Army staff stepped in. Yet, after much deliberations, both parties had agreed to each other’s demands,” said a CMRL official speaking to DT Next.

The renaming ceremony was held on Monday in the presence of Rajesh Chaturvedi, director (Systems and Operations), CMRL, and Lieutenant general KS Brar, General Officer Commanding, Dakshin Bharat Area, along with several senior officials and staff of both OTA and CMRL.
