CHENNAI: Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin met with athletes participating in the ongoing CM Trophy at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on Monday and took stock of the preparations for the smooth conduct of the games amid the Meteorological Department's warning of heavy rains looming over the city.

Udhayanidhi also visited the food court, watched Judo matches and gave away medals and interacted with local officials to understand the arrangements made.

Speaking to the media during the visit, Udhayanidhi stated that officials have made all necessary arrangements for the transport and accommodation of the athletes in case of heavy rain, and that there may be an extension of the games beyond its original schedule if needed.

Highlighting the main objective of the CM Trophy is to unearth talent from the grassroots level, Udhayanidhi expressed his satisfaction with the increased participation in the games. “We have around 12 lakh participants this year in district-level competitions, a significant increase from last season's five lakh participants.”

Chennai district currently leads the medal tally with over 50 gold medals out of a total 125 plus medals.
