Chennai: Green canopies installed at city signals for motorists' convenience
The shade shelters have been set up after identifying 10 locations at the traffic signal in the city in the first phase of the initiative.

CHENNAI: In order to reduce the impact of the heat on the motorists, shaded shelters have been set up at traffic signals in various localities across the city by the Greater Chennai Corporation. Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner J Radhakrishnan inspected the shelters on Thursday at Raja Muthiah Road near Ripon Building.
The shade shelters have been set up after identifying 10 locations at the traffic signal in the city in the first phase of the initiative. These shelters have been set up with the help of City Traffic Police. J Radhakrishnan said that the shelters will help the motorists and reduce the impact of the direct heat on them.
He said that the initiative considering the safety of the motorists, these pavilions are constructed at a height with steel rods, ensuring safe passage of large vehicles, and the porous fabric is placed on the top, to make sure it does not fall due to the wind. Drinking water is kept in earthen pots and water booths are also set up in these areas for the use of the public and motorists.
The commissioner said that there are 34,000 streets in the Greater Chennai Corporation and in the first phase, shade shelters have been set up at bus stops, major junctions and signal areas where there is heavy traffic. Following this, all
steps will be taken to set up these shade shelters in the other areas as well.
He added that the system will be slightly modified during the rainy season, with fiber materials on the top as shade. The action will be taken in collaboration with Highways Department to set up shelters at traffic signals. Individuals who have expressed willingness to set up shade shelters will also be coordinated by the Corporation authorities.
After the prediction of heat wave until 28th May, Greater Chennai Corporation has undertaken various initiatives to set up facilities to reduce the impact of the heat. The drinking water booths have been set up at 199 places in the corporation areas. The water booths being set up by political parties are also being coordinated by the civic body and
ORS has been set up in 299 places. So far, 1,44,527 persons have received ORS.
