CHENNAI:In a relief to rail commuters, normal EMU train services have resumed from 11:35 am on Sunday as the remodelling works at Tambaram Yard which lasted for nearly a month have been completed.

The works which commenced on 23 July were completed in a record time enabling the Division to restore normal services in the Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu section, said a Southern Railway statement.

Suburban train services are now being operated according to the normal schedule in the Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu section. In addition, express train services will also run as per schedule starting Sunday, said the statement.

The cancellation of EMU trains has caused a huge difficulty for the past few days for the commuters. The restoration of the EMU train services is a relief to office-goers and college-going students. “The completion of works gives a sort of relief and the speed of the trains has increased compared to the previous days,” said Meena S, a commuter who travels daily from Tambaram to Egmore.

The trains were cancelled as part of remodelling works in Tambaram yard which resulted in huge congestion across the city as the local trains were one of the major means of commute for the people. The cancellations were in the Chennai Beach to Tambaram section which has the highest footfall among the four suburban sections in the city. All MEMU and EMU trains were also cancelled in the city from August 15th to 18th at noon and the passenger specials were available in a time gap of 40 minutes.
