CHENNAI: The Madras High Court (MHC) has directed the State to lay a tar road in a general pathway within four months, for the access of St. Joseph matriculation higher secondary school at Veerakovil, Tiruvallur District.

A litigant M Munisekar from Puliankutta village, Tiruvallur district filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) before the MHC to direct the State to lay down a tar road in Veerakovil for the benefit of the general public at large.

The PIL was listed before the first division bench of the MHC comprising Chief Justice S V Gangapurwala and Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy.

The litigant is the father of two students who are studying in St. Joseph matriculation higher secondary school at Veerakovil, which lacks a proper road, the litigant alleged.

He stated that the school is situated on a muddy pathway near the Arakkonam - Tiruvallur State highway. Due to the poor maintenance of the village panchayat, the pathway is bumpy, patholed, and water also stagnant in rainy seasons, said the petitioner.

He also submitted that his 8-year-old daughter was injured due to the poor condition of the road and sought to lay a tar road to safeguard the lives of school students. The litigant also stated that his representation before authorities to lay the road was left without any action.

The school management also submitted before the court that they would also contribute if the government lays a tar road.

Recording the submission, the bench directed the State to consider the litigation and take a decision within four months, and disposed of the litigation.
