CHENNAI: The police on Saturday arrested a 31-year-old man for killing his father following an argument.

On information that an elderly man was lying with injuries on the road near the Trustpuram ground, the Kodambakkam police reached the spot and moved him to a hospital where he succumbed late on Friday night.

The police identified the deceased as Stephen Edward (56), of Varadarajpet in Kodambakkam, who worked as a painter. The accused is his younger son, Ajay Kumar.

Investigations revealed that Ajay Kumar gets drunk and engages in fights with the residents in the neighbourhood often. On Friday night, Ajay Kumar was having a conversation with his father and complained to him that some of the neighbours were making fun of him. To which Edward asked if Kumar had committed any mischief. Angered by this, the son started verbally abusing his father. Kumar then smashed his father’s face with a rock and fled the scene.

The son was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
