Additionally, the demand among the parents to enrol their daughters has been particularly high as the Ashok Nagar girls higher secondary government schools constantly manage to get 100 pass percentage.
CHENNAI: With the school admissions for the new academic year 2024-25 commenced from March 1, the parents of the government girls' higher secondary school in Ashok Nagar have been thronging to enrol their daughters in class 6.
This has highlighted the preference among the public for government schools over private and matriculation schools.
A teacher of the Ashok Nagar school claimed that every year they have a high number of parents visiting the school during admission season. And, particularly on Thursday, more than 500 seats were filled of the total 600 seats in class 6 alone.
Speaking to DT NEXT, a teacher of the school said, "It is regular for the Ashok Nagar higher secondary school to have high enrolment numbers, especially in class 6. The students often join here after dropping out from matriculation and private schools in the area."
In the case of Ashok Nagar school, the total strength is 4,500 with students studying from classes 6 to 12.
Another teacher added that the enrolment in the school is particularly high because of its performance in board exams over the years. "Our school has managed to get 100 pass percent consecutively. Due to this, parents are confident that their daughters will perform better if studied here, " added the teacher.
Meanwhile, a government teacher said that the government higher secondary schools in Ashok Nagar, Choolaimedu and Virugambakkam usually have high enrolment. "Due to parents being unable to pay fees in private and matriculation schools and with the confidence that their children will perform better, these schools regularly see high enrolment, "said a teacher of Virugambakkam school.
