Instead of acting against accused, insecure regime cracks down on protesters: Seeman
The protest led by NTK leader Seeman was scheduled to happen at 10 am in Valluvar Kottam on Tuesday
CHENNAI: CHENNAI: Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) chief coordinator Seeman on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the DMK government, questioning its sincerity in addressing the sexual assault on an Anna University student.
Seeman's broadside came amidst mounting outrage over the government's handling of the case, with the opposition and civil society groups demanding swift action against the accused.
"The government's claims of taking swift action against the accused ring hollow, " Seeman said while addressing a press conference in Periamet after he was arrested and later released over an attempted protest at Valluvar Kottam without police permission.
"Why are protesters being prevented from expressing their outrage? What is the government trying to hide?" he asked.
Seeman also expressed scepticism about the efficacy of the CCTV cameras installed on the university campus, wondering if they had been functional in the first place.
"Were these cameras of any use in preventing or detecting crimes in the past?" he asked.
The NTK chief coordinator also raised questions about the background of the accused, suggesting that he may have had connections with influential people.
"How did the accused muster the courage to commit such a heinous crime? Did his connections with those in power embolden him?" Seeman asked.
Seeman also criticised TVK president Vijay's meeting with Governor R N Ravi, describing it as a mere "photo opportunity."
"What tangible outcomes can be expected from such meetings?" he asked.
Seeman also highlighted the issue of six state varsities functioning without vice-chancellors, blaming the Governor for the delay. "Is the Governor serious about ensuring that our universities function effectively?" he asked.
Seeman also attacked the government over the FIR leak, attributed to a "technical glitch."
"Is this a credible explanation? Has the government released the confession of the accused?" he questioned.
Seeman also denied IPS officer V Varun Kumar's allegation, calling it a "blatant lie".
"He is indulging in a comic show. I have never sent anyone to apologise to him. He is trying to deflect attention from his own misconduct. Is he trying to gain publicity or curry favour with his superiors? He should have taken the district secretary post and joined the DMK," he added.
