CHENNAI: State BJP unit president K Annamalai condemned the State government for forcing girl students attending an event presided over by Chief Minister MK Stalin to remove their black dupatta on Sunday.

Taking to social media, Annamalai lambasted the government for its "autocratic" stance, asserting that the incident has instilled fear among the people.

"Fear has crept in, and they (the ruling DMK government) are utterly clueless and have become hopeless," he wrote.

Annamalai's outburst was sparked by reports that girl students wearing black dupattas were compelled to remove them as a precondition to enter the event venue.

The BJP leader questioned the rationale behind this move, terming it a blatant display of authoritarianism.

"What kind of autocracy is this?" Annamalai asked in his post, resonating with the party's cadre and supporters.

The incident has ignited a heated debate on social media, with many users expressing outrage and dismay over the government's actions.

Earlier today, CM Stalin inaugurated the International Conference on the Centenary of the Discovery of the Indus Valley Civilization at the Egmore Museum here.

However, the event was marred by controversy when officials forced students to remove their black dupattas, handbags, and umbrellas before entering the venue.

This move has raised eyebrows, given Chief Minister Stalin's previous stance on similar issues.

As the Leader of the Opposition, Stalin strongly opposed the practice of not allowing students to wear black dress at government events when anti-NEET protests were raging. He had then called it unfair and discriminatory.

The fact that a similar restriction was imposed on students attending an event presided over by Chief Minister Stalin himself has created a controversy, with many questioning the consistency of his policies.
