CHENNAI: A Bangladeshi national who has been staying illegally in India for over 12 years was arrested from the Chennai airport when he was trying to fly to Malaysia on a fake Indian passport on Monday night.

Immigration officials were scanning the passport of Mujib Hussain (40) who was scheduled to board the flight to Kuala Lumpur when they found it to be a fake and detained him.

Hussain’s questioning revealed he was a Bangladeshi citizen and entered India illegally via Tripura in 2012. He had since been working as a daily wager. Hussain had also managed to get an Aadhar card, Voter ID and other government ID cards.

Hussain came to Chennai in 2017 and started working at hotels in Nungambakkam and Vandalur. He managed to secure a fake passport on which he was about to travel to Malaysia for work, the officials said.

Hussain had planned to visit Malaysia on a tourist visa and stay there illegally for a few years, they said. The immigration officers arrested Hussain and handed him to the CCB in Chennai. Further investigation is on.
