CHENNAI: Chief Minister M K Stalin on Friday announced that a world-class convention centre capable of accommodating 5,000 people would be developed in the name of former State Chief Minister M Karunanidhi soon.

Speaking at the centenary celebration of Kalaignar M Karunanidhi in which former West Bengal Governor Gopalakrishna Gandhi took part, Stalin announced that a world-class convention centre called Kalaignar Convention Centre would be built in Chennai.

Remarking that it would be on par with convention centres across the world, the Chief Minister said that the Kalaignar Convention Centre would host international film festivals and global trade conclaves in which multi - national firms would participate.

“The idea (of building Kalaignar convention Centre) occurred to me during the Singapore - Japan trip. Chennai must have a large convention centre like in many other countries. That it exists in the name of kalaignar would be a matter of pride. A convention centre in Kalaignar's name would take the pride of Kalaignar to countries afar for centuries," he added.

Though a 10,000 sq meter trade centre is available at Nandambakkam in Chennai and another 12,000 sq meter structure is being constructed there, it would not meet the growing demands, the CM reasoned.

Considering that, the Kalaignar convention centre capable of accommodating 5,000 people and spread across 25 acres would be constructed with a world-class conference hall, five-star lodging facility and restaurants, media centre, parks and parking facility, he added.
