CHENNAI: Chief Minister and DMK president MK Stalin on Thursday declared that his party would approach the Supreme Court against the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, condemning it as an infringement on religious harmony and minority rights.

Speaking in the Assembly, Stalin recalled that on March 27, the House had passed a resolution demanding the complete withdrawal of the Bill, which posed a severe threat to the religious autonomy of the Muslim community and the secular fabric of India. "Despite nationwide opposition from major political parties, the Bill was pushed through in Lok Sabha with 288 votes in favour and 232 against. This is not a trivial number," he pointed out.

Stalin also condemned the way the bill was passed, stating, "Pushing through such a crucial legislation at 2 am, despite widespread resistance, is a calculated attack on the fundamental principles of our democracy."

Emphasising the State's firm stance, Stalin announced that the DMK would take the legal route to challenge it. "Tamil Nadu will fight, fight, and fight until we defeat this unconstitutional law. I assure this House that we will legally prevent this attack on the Constitution," he asserted.

As a mark of protest, DMK legislators, along with members of allied parties, participated in the Assembly proceedings wearing black badges.

While AIADMK whip SP Velumani also backed the government's stance, BJP floor leader Nainar Nagendran vehemently opposed it and staged a walkout along with other BJP MLAs.
