CHENNAI:Steps have been initiated for the appointment of as many as 2,553 doctors across the State while vacancies for 984 pharmacists would be filled within 15 days, said the Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian in Thanjavur on Tuesday.

“The government is very particular to ensure the healthy life of all the people and thus, 2.56 lakh lives have been saved with the spending of Rs 221.11 crore under ‘Innuyir Kappom Thittam’,’’ the Minister said.

After laying the foundation stone for the Critical Care Centre, Health Minister Ma Subramanian said, a fund of Rs 4.4 crore for the construction of the new Accident and Emergency Care Centre in Thanjavur was sanctioned in 2017 but the works did not begin due to various administrative reasons.

“Now, the new site at Thirukkanurpatti has been identified and the detailed project report would soon be readied and the works would be completed within one year and the service would commence thereafter,” the Minister said.

He said the centre would help provide treatment to the road accident victims of accidents on the national highways. “Additionally, free treatment of up to Rs 2 lakh can be provided to them under the Nammai Kakkum NK 48 scheme at the government hospitals and private hospitals for road traffic accident victims. Through this scheme, fatalities due to accidents on national highways will be prevented and delays in taking accident victims to the hospital will be avoided and it will lead to timely treatment,” the Minister said.

He also inspected the ongoing works for the Cancer Centre which is being built at a budget of Rs 42 crore at the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital.

Stating that only two cancer centres were functioning in the State earlier, he said that after DMK formed the government, cancer centres were established at Thanjavur, Coimbatore, Nagercoil, Kancheepuram, and Salem. This apart, a Government Children’s Hospital on par with that of Egmore Hospital would be established in Thanjavur.

“Similarly, the fertility centres that were functioning only in private hospitals have been established in the Government Hospital in Chennai and another centre would soon be established in Madurai,” Subramanian said.

Among other facilities in Thanjavur, new health centre buildings in three places are being constructed in the district.

Several new facilities are also planned at the Kumbakonam Government District Headquarters Hospital for Rs 4 crore.

The Minister said that the government has inaugurated medical facilities worth Rs 73.09 crores, including 6 sub-health centres, 5 primary health centres, and other medical buildings in Thanjavur. Later, the Minister visited Tiruvarur and inaugurated new buildings at various places at an estimated cost of Rs 53.54 crore.
