Erode East bypoll to be held on February 5, 2025

The Election Commission of India has announced that the by-election for the constituency will be held alongside other vacant constituencies across the country.

CHENNAI: By-election to the Erode East constituency will be held on February 5. This will be the second by-election for the constituency, necessitated by the death of veteran Congress leader and MLA, EVKS Elangovan, who died on December 14, 2024.

The former TNCC president was fielded as the party's candidate after the passing of his son E Thirumahan Everaa, who died of a cardiac arrest on January 4, 2023. Elangovan secured a victory in the by-election held on February 27, 2023, with a margin of 66,233 votes. Despite his reluctance to contest, the party leadership insisted that he stand for the election.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu State Assembly adopted condolence resolutions over the demise of Elangovan and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday.

The Election Commission of India has announced that the by-election for the constituency will be held alongside other vacant constituencies across the country. The last date to file nominations is January 17, with the scrutiny of nominations scheduled for January 18, and the withdrawal of candidatures set for January 20. Polling will take place on February 5 and the counting of votes has been scheduled for February 8.
