32-year-old school teacher buried alive in Coonoor mud slip
On receiving information, the fire and rescue personnel rushed to the spot and removed mounds of mud to rescue those trapped inside the house.
COIMBATORE: A 32-year-old woman was buried alive due to a mud slip triggered by heavy rains in Coonoor in Nilgiris on Monday.
The police identified the deceased as Jayalakshmi, a teacher in a private school. She stepped out of her house after hearing some loud noise in the wee hours, police said. A sudden landslide occurred and she was buried alive. Her husband Ravi and two daughters were trapped inside the house and they were unable to come out.
On receiving information, the fire and rescue personnel rushed to the spot and removed mounds of mud to rescue those trapped inside the house. However, they couldn’t rescue Jayalakshmi. Her body was sent for a post-mortem examination at Coonoor Government Hospital.
The boulders fell and trees were uprooted due to heavy rains causing a block between Kallar and Adderley Railway Station.
Tourists returned disappointed as the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) train service between Mettupalayam and Ooty and in return was suspended for a day on Monday. The restoration works on the track are under way to remove blocks.
As heavy rains continued to lash all through the night, several houses were inundated in Coonoor and its surrounding neighbourhoods.
The Coonoor Municipality authorities deployed motors to pump out stagnant water from houses in LG Quarters and Model House areas.
The residents sought proper drainage facilities to prevent the stagnation of water in their localities.
