CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Wednesday issued notices to popular film director Atlee, production house AGS Entertainment and its executive director Archana Kalpathi, in a case of alleged plagiarism related to actor Vijay's film Bigil.

The notices were issued by a division bench of Justice M Sundar and R Sakthivel while hearing a petition moved by a script writer Amjath Meeran to condone the delay of 73 days in moving three appeals against the dismissal of his three applications.

The petitioner preferred a civil suit against the director and producer of the film Bigil charging that they stole his script. He sought the court's directions to appoint an advocate commissioner to investigate the allegation.

Meeran claimed that the defendants stole his script titled Brasil and made it into Bigil. He also sought the court to direct the defendants to pay Rs 10 lakh as initial compensation.

The petitioner claimed that the Writers Guild of America (West) had certified his script in 2015, hence, he moved three applications in the court, seeking to allow him to produce additional evidence supporting his case.

The single judge allowed the applications on the condition that the petitioner pays Rs 1 lakh each to the defendants. However, the petitioner couldn't pay within the stipulated time and his applications were dismissed.

Aggrieved by this, Meeran moved a petition to condone the delay in filing appeals.
