CHENNAI: The police on Monday arrested a man, a former AIADMK functionary, for hurling an empty liquor bottle at DMK headquarters, Anna Arivalayam, during the early hours of the day. When the police apprehended him, he told them that he threw the bottle to express his protest against the State government for not closing down Tasmac liquor outlets.

The arrested man was identified as Govardhan of Kannagi Nagar. Ironically, he was drunk at the time of the incident. After a quarrel with his wife over his alcohol addiction, he took his bike from his home and reached Teynampet. After parking his bike a few metres away from Anna Arivalayam, he walked towards the building, hurled the bottle at the gate and ran away.

The policemen nabbed him after a brief chase and handed him over to the Teynampet police for an inquiry. As his bike had the AIADMK's Two-Leaves sticker, police initially thought he did so due to party rivalry. But investigations revealed that he is not a functionary anymore.

He was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
