TIRUCHY: AIU sleuths from Tiruchy International Airport on Monday seized hydroponic weeds worth Rs 5 crore from a passenger coming from Malaysia.

While the officials were checking the baggage of passengers bound from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia by Air Asia flight, they suspected the movements of a passenger and so, the officials took the passenger to a separate room and conducted a thorough inspection in which they found that the particular person was smuggling hydroponic weeds worth Rs 5 crore concealed in his cabin bag.

Soon, the officials seized the hydroponic weeds weighing 5 kg worth Rs 5.1 crore and arrested the passenger and conducted an interrogation. The passenger confessed to the officials that he was approached by some unidentified persons at Kuala Lumpur and he was handed over the parcel that should be handed over to persons who would wait in the Tiruchy Airport.

He was offered money for carrying the contraband. Hydroponic is a method of plant cultivation without soil and the weeds grown under such a system would give a high yield and this is considered to be high potential cannabis among the drug smugglers.
