No-confidence motion against the Kancheepuram Mayor failed
It was alleged that the mayor's husband Yuvaraj would visit the wards and get mamool, while the mayor remianed a mute spectator.
CHENNAI: The no-confidence motion against the Kancheepuram Mayor Mahalakshmi Yuvaraj failed as the councillors, including those demanded her outster, did not attend the council meeting on Monday.
The Kancheepuram residents say they lost confidence in all of the councillors as it was just a political drama. They said that the councillors who were blaming the mayor for the lack of developments in their respective wards have all together vanished when there was a voting taken to disqualify the mayor.
The Kancheepuram corporation consists of 51 wards. Mahalakshmi Yuvaraj who belongs to the DMK party was elected as the Mayor of the Corporation. However, a group of DMK councillors were not satisfied with the appointment of Mahalakshmi Yuvaraj.
It was alleged that the mayor's husband Yuvaraj would visit the wards and get mamool, while the mayor remianed a mute spectator. The councillors also blamed the Mayor for not supporting development in their wards.
A few months ago around 38 councillors met the corporation commissioner and Collector and requested to disqualify the mayor since she lost the majority. They boycotted the council meeting and only 13 out of 55 councillors accepted the mayor's invitation and participated in the meeting. Even during the peace talks of Minister for Municipal Administration KN Nehru failed and 30 DMK councillors strongly opposed the Mayor.
Following that the Corporation commissioner two weeks ago announced that a vote of no confidence motion will be taken against Mahalakshmi Yuvaraj. While Monday was the voting day It was found that all the councillors along with their family members were taken to resorts on the buses on Saturday night itself and were asked to skip the council meeting.
On Monday ahead of the no confidence motion voting all the arrangements were made in the Kancheepuram corporation office and Commissioner Senthil Murugan reached the council hall around 9.50 am but none of the councillors including the mayor turned up to the meeting. Later the commissioner announced that the no-confidence motion failed and here after the councillors could not demand to change the mayor for the next 13 months.
These incidents made the residents of Kancheepuram angry and they said that whenever they contacted the councillors over any issue they would blame the Mayor but now all the councillors disappeared from the town along with the mayor this makes us feel like the public who voted for them are jokers. If they cared for the development of the wards all of them would have been present in the council meeting and voted against the Mayor.
