CHENNAI: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) on Monday announced that the northeast monsoon rains have withdrawn today in Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states. Additionally, heavy rainfall has been forecast for several districts from January 30 to February 1 due to easterly winds.

Though the northeast monsoon ended on December 31, official confirmation of its departure from TN, Puducherry and Karaikal arrived only on Monday. The State has received 1,179 mm of rainfall throughout the year, which is an increase by 143 mm in 2023 (1,036 mm).

TN has witnessed 15th best overall rainfall in 2024 from 1871, and the capital city received excess rainfall for the fifth consecutive year during the monsoon season. It’s noteworthy that Tirunelveli received 100% largely excess rainfall and no deficit spells were reported in 2024.

On the other hand, due to light to moderate easterlies/northeasterlies prevailing over the region in the lower tropospheric levels, heavy rainfall is likely to occur over Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, The Nilgiris, Coimbatore and Kanniyakumari from January 30 to February 1. Some areas in north and south TN might receive light to moderate rain in the coming days.

RMC officials have forecast dry weather to prevail across the State in the day. Expect misty mornings over isolated places for the next few days. As per extended range predictions by dynamical models, near normal to slightly above normal rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu till February 6.

In Chennai and suburbs, misty mornings will prevail and a drop in temperature is likely for the next two days. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to record around 31-degree Celsius and 21-degree Celsius respectively.
