TIRUCHY: An orthopaedic surgeon from Tiruchy ESI Hospital was manhandled by a gang after an altercation erupted over parking of their vehicles on the hospital premises on Tuesday night after which police arrested three persons on Wednesday.

Dr Muthu Karthikeyan (45), Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Tiruchy ESI Hospital, was reportedly coming to the hospital in his car when another car, driven by Praveen (33) from Periyamilaguparai, came in his way.

With Praveen’s vehicle, which was coming out of the hospital, blocking him, Muthu Karthikeyan asked him to give way. However, Praveen was not willing to move his car and this triggered an altercation between the two, which snowballed into an assault.

After a while, Muthu Karthikeyan went to the hospital. Suddenly, a group of persons led by Praveen came to the hospital and started manhandling the doctor, leaving him with multiple injuries. This triggered tension for a while and after the ESI staff intervened the group left the place.

Meanwhile, both Muthu Karthikeyan and Praveen lodged complaints with the Cantonment police who registered a case and arrested Praveen, Subramanian (42), from Periyamilaguparai and Akeer Batcha (50) from Kallar Street. The police produced the trio before the court and lodged them in the central prison.

Various organisations including the Government Doctors’ Union and Indian Medical Association condemned the incident and staged a protest on the ESI hospital premises. They sought stringent action against the culprits and the safety of medical practitioners from anti-social elements.
