RPF officials seize Rs 75 lakh hawala money at Tiruchy railway station
They intercepted the man and questioned him, and found his replies unconvincing. This prompted a thorough search of his belongings.
CHENNAI: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel seized Rs 75 lakh unaccounted money from a passenger on Kolkata-Tiruchirapalli Howrah Express Train on Saturday.
Police said when the train arrived at the Tiruchirapalli railway junction, the RPF team led by Inspector K P Sebastian observed a passenger, identified as V Arockiadoss (49) hailing from Devakottai in Sivaganga district, behaving in a suspicious manner with a bag.
He was questioned based on suspicion, and during the checking, Rs 75 lakh cash, mostly in Rs 500 and Rs 200 denominations, was recovered from his possession.
Around 2.45 am, RPF officials at the station grew suspicious about a passenger who got down from a train carrying a black bag.
He could not produce mandatory documents to possess the huge amount.
Arockiadoss confessed that he was assigned to deliver the bag containing unaccounted cash to an unknown person at Karaikudi in Sivaganga. He travelled in the unreserved compartment of the train from Chennai to Tiruchy.
Police suspect that the seized cash may be linked to hawala transactions.
Arockiadoss, along with seized money, was later handed over to the Income Tax officials for further investigation.
