COIMBATORE: The Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) sleuths on Tuesday quizzed BJP state treasurer SR Sekhar in connection with the seizure of Rs 4 crore in cash in Chennai during the Lok Sabha polls.

The cash was seized by the flying squad sleuths in a train at Tambaram railway station on April 7. As part of the ongoing investigations, the CB-CID sleuths served summon to Sekhar at his residence in Sakthi Nagar in Coimbatore on Monday. He was asked to appear in the CB-CID office in Chennai on Tuesday.

However, Sekhar expressed inability to appear for an inquiry because of his scheduled trip to Delhi to carry out party work. He also sought time till May 30 to turn up for inquiry.

Meanwhile, more than 20 cops led by DSP Sasidharan arrived at his house in Sakthi Nagar around 9 am on Tuesday to interrogate him. After two hours of questioning to find out the source of seized money and if the party has any links in it, the CB-CID sleuths wrapped up the inquiry around 11 am.

‘State using police to create sensationalism’

Later, while addressing reporters, Sekhar said as he was preparing to leave for Delhi, the CB-CID sleuths arrived suddenly and began to question without issuing any notice of intimation. “They asked some irrelevant questions. The police force has been used as a tool by the state government to create sensationalism,” he said.

Claiming that a case has been filed in court to ban investigation in the case, Sekhar said, the BJP is not hesitant to face the investigation. “The BJP does not have any links over the seizure of Rs 4 crore in cash. Police were sent with an intent to malign the image of the party,” he added.
