2 killed in cracker unit fire; EPS urges for safety measures

CHENNAI: Two women workers were killed in a fire accident, which occurred in a cracker unit at Thayilpatti near Sivakasi, Virudhunagar district on Tuesday.

The deceased have been identified as Bhanu alias Bhanu Saraswathi (39) of Vembakottai and Murugeshwari (37) of Viswanatham, sources said. The victims succumbed to burns on the spot.

Fire tenders from Sivakasi and Vembakottai extinguished the fire and cleared the bodies. District Fire Officer A Vivekanandan, Additional DFO Manikandan and Revenue officials inspected the spot. Enquiries revealed that the victims were engaged in filling chemicals for making low decibel crackers in a room. Based on a complaint, Vembakottai police have filed a case.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition and former chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami expressed condolence to the demise of two workers in cracker unit in Sivakasi and urged the state government to take necessary measures to prevent such untoward explosions.

“I was deeply saddened to hear about the explosion in a cracker unit in Mangundapatti in Sivakasi. It claimed the lives of two of the women workers - Murugeswari and Banu. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families,” Palaniswami said in a social media post.

He appealed to the government to extend relief measures to the families of the victims and take suitable measures to prevent such explosions in the cracker units and protect the life and livelihood of the workers.
