CHENNAI: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted heavy rain over Chengalpattu, Cuddalore and Villupuram districts on December 24 and 25 due to the current system prevailing over the sea.

The depression over west central Bay of Bengal moved east-northeastwards and weakened into a well-marked low pressure, and persisted over the same region on Sunday.

The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 3.1 km above mean sea level. It’s likely to move west-southwestwards and reach southwest Bay of Bengal near north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts around December 24.

Under its influence, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected over Chengalpattu, Villupuram and Cuddalore on Tuesday and Wednesday (Dec 24 and 25). The rest of the State is likely to receive light to moderate over isolated places for the next two days. Additionally, a thunderstorm warning has been given for Tamil Nadu till Thursday.

In Chennai and suburbs, the sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy and some areas might receive light rains. Expect haze/mist during the early morning hours for the next two days. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 31-32 degree Celsius and 24-25 degree Celsius respectively at Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam weather stations.

Officials have urged fishermen not to venture into the sea till Dec 26 due to the low pressure area prevailing over the sea. It leads to strong winds, reaching 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph, along and off north Tamil Nadu coast. Those in the deep sea are advised to return to the shore immediately.
