CHENNAI: The Vice-Chancellors of all State-run universities should ensure that convocations are held in August, September and October in the coming years, directed Governor RN Ravi – who is also the Chancellor of all public universities – on Sunday.

According to Raj Bhavan, this proactive approach would help graduates receive their degree certificates promptly soon after examination results, allowing them to seize academic and career opportunities without any delay.

What the statement did not reveal is how the spat between the State government and the Governor delayed convocations because a full-time V-C could not be appointed to at least five State-run universities due to a difference of opinion on the search committee constitution.

Stressing on ensuring that academic activities were conducted on time, the Raj Bhavan said that timely completion of academic activities, including convocations, was crucial for graduates from the State in today's competitive environment, where official credentials are essential for securing opportunities.

"By prioritising these initiatives, we are fostering an academic culture that promotes both academic excellence and personal growth, ensuring our students are well-prepared to meet future challenges," a statement from Raj Bhavan said.

The Raj Bhavan further said Governor-Chancellor Ravi was resolutely committed to elevating the quality and standards of higher education in Tamil Nadu.

"Beginning with Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Governor-Chancellor Ravi presided over convocation for 19 State universities and has awarded degrees to 7,918 students in person, while 8,20,072 students received their degrees in absentia. Overall, 8,27,990 graduates received their degrees across the 19 state universities," the Raj Bhavan statement added.

It also informed that due to academic considerations at the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University's request, the convocation for the university has been scheduled for November 20.
