CHENNAI: Government Railway Police have arrested four youths including a juvenile delinquent for creating a ruckus in an inebriated state on the Alleppey Express which departed from Chennai Central on Saturday night.

A video of the incident showing the youths arguing brashly with the passengers had gone viral on social media.

Police said that the incident happened during the early hours of Sunday, when the train was moving between Erode and Tiruppur. A family from Kolathur, Chennai who were travelling on the train had questioned the youths who were talking loudly in an obscene manner, much to the chagrin of the other passengers.

The youths were under the influence of alcohol and had also allegedly smoked in the compartment. When a passenger, Manikandan, questioned the youths for their behaviour, they allegedly threatened and assaulted him.

When the train reached Tiruppur, the youths got off the train and fled the scene. Based on a complaint, GRP (Tiruppur) registered a case and a special team was constituted to apprehend the suspects.

On Sunday, Police arrested M Ashok (18) of Tiruppur and a 17-year-old. Based on their inputs, the police arrested two others -- S Sudalairaj (18) and K Karan (23) of Tiruppur. The minor boy was sent to a government home for boys while the other three were produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.

Following the incident, instructions have been given to all inspectors to increase patrolling on night trains to ensure safety of train passengers.
