CHENNAI: A 22-year-old woman was injured in Virudhunagar on Friday night after she accidentally fell off a joyride at an exhibition organised as part of the Panguni Pongal festival.

The victim, identified as Kausalya from Burma colony, Virudhunagar, was said to have suffered a spinal cord injury. The victim was rushed to a private hospital for treatment. However, the victim was out of danger. Officials from the public works department and Fire and Rescue Service personnel inspected the spot, sources said.

The incident occurred around 10 pm. It was suspected that the victim had not securely fastened the safety belt while taking on the joyride called Tsunami Raatinam, which caused the injury.

The exhibition, in line with the festival, commenced on March 28 and was scheduled to conclude on April 20. Ahead of the exhibition schedule, a joint committee comprising officials from the PWD, TNFRS and Department of Information and Public Relations was formed as per the directive of the district administration and inspections were carried out twice on the premises. Checks on the equipment and amusement rides were also performed, sources said. However, Virudhunagar West police filed a case against four persons for the incident, based on a complaint.
