Woman DSP manhandled during stir over truck driver’s murder in Aruppukkottai
Senior cop pulled by her hair in the skirmish; 1 arrested, 6 others being probed for the attack
MADURAI: An ordinary protest over the death of a truck driver triggered tension in Aruppukkottai town in Virudhunagar district on Tuesday after the agitators allegedly manhandled a woman Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).
According to sources, DSP Gayathri led a team to handle a group of protesters staging a demonstration demanding action into the murder of a person named Kalikumar, a truck driver in Ramanathapuram district.
Even as the DSP was ordering the protesters to disperse from the spot, the crowd refused to heed and one of the agitators pulled her hair in the skirmish.
Police personnel rescued the DSP and chased away the protesters after she was manhandled by people in the crowd. Virudhunagar Superintendent of Police D Kannan rushed to Aruppukottai following the incident.
According to a statement issued by the Virudhunagar police on Tuesday, A Balamurugan (30) of Nellikulam was arrested on charges of obstructing the police from discharging their duty and attacking the cops. Six others were picked up and are being interrogated.
Sources said that Kalikumar was murdered in broad daylight allegedly by an armed gang at Kethanaickenpatti village near Tiruchuli in Virudhunagar district on Monday.
Kalikumar’s body was kept at the hospital morgue after a post-mortem. His relatives refused to accept the body demanding the arrest of the prime accused and staged a protest. Police said relatives and friends of the murdered truck driver blocked the road in front of the government hospital on Aruppukottai-Tiruchuli road leading to the skirmish.
