YouTuber Irfan sparked controversy fo filming childbirth, cutting umbilical cord (Maalaimalar)

CHENNAI: Months after getting into hot water for revealing the gender of his unborn child, YouTuber Irfan has landed in a controversy for posting a ‘Delivery vlog’ which had footage of him cutting the umbilical cord during his wife Aaliya’s labour and delivery.

Only a healthcare professional can clamp and cut the umbilical cord soon after the child’s birth.

Dr J Rajamurthy, Director of Medical and Rural Health Services, stated that a notice will be issued seeking an explanation regarding this incident, and the Directorate (DMS) is looking into the issue.

“We have sought an explanation regarding the issue from the Rainbow Children’s Hospital, where the incident happened. If the explanation is unsatisfactory, we can cancel the hospital’s approval under the Clinical Establishments Act. Tamil Nadu Medical Council can take action against the concerned doctor and nurse after our report on them,” said DMS.

Earlier, YouTuber Irfan was issued a show cause notice for revealing the gender of his unborn child, which is a punishable offence in India. The DMS added that his explanation was accepted after Irfan apologized for the gender reveal incident.

Rajamurthy added that lakhs of people are watching Irfan’s video, and it is unsafe for someone to enter the operation theatre with a camera and other equipment. He worried that this could influence the audience to do the same and opined that it was not right to promote himself in this manner.

"People would enter the operation theatre with cameras and post it live or on social media. There are certain protocols for the operation procedures, and infection can also occur in this manner. It is better to avoid such incidents in the future," he said, adding, "We will ask for his explanation in this regard as well and take further action. It is not an easy procedure (cutting the umbilical cord). While doctors and nurses are being trained for this, the video presents it as if it were an ordinary procedure, and this publicity video can mislead the public."

The YouTuber has taken down the vlog from his channel.
