CHENNAI: A group of men dressed like cleanliness workers trespassed into YouTuber Savukku Shankar's house and ransacked it, threatened his mother, and dumped faecal matter on the floors of his house in Kilpauk on Monday morning.
While Kilpauk Police had issued a CSR based on Shankar’s mother's complaint, the DGP transferred the case to CB-CID.
At the time of the incident, only Shankar's 70-year-old mother, A Kamala, was present at the home. According to Kamala's complaint to the Kilpauk police, the vandals gained entry by breaking open the backdoor, damaged the properties in the house and threw buckets of sewerage water in the bedroom, kitchen and another room.
Shankar took to social media and shared posts of a video call made by one of the trespassers from Kamala’s phone.
In her complaint to the Kilpauk police, Kamala alleged that the group was led by a lawyer named Vanishree Vijayakumar, who even posted their actions live on Facebook.
Later, in the day, Shankar addressed media persons and alleged that the attack on his house was orchestrated by Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president and MLA K Selvaperunthagai.
According to the police sources, the trespassers claimed to have taken offense to Shankar's alleged derogatory comments about cleanliness workers in one of his YouTube videos. However, Shankar denied making derogatory remarks and he said that his comments were only in support of the workers.
“I am wondering if they are actual cleanliness workers. Those who came today are motivated henchmen. Selvaperunthagai and Chennai city police are behind this,” he said.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Police DGP Shankar Jiwal has transferred the investigations to CB-CID, citing a request from the Commissioner of Police, Chennai, A Arun as Shankar and his mother Kamala levelled allegations against Greater Chennai Police and the Commissioner of Police.
The incident received widespread condemnation from several quarters including Leader of Opposition, Edappadi K Palaniswami, Congress MPs, Karti P Chidambaram and Sasikanth Senthil, Shankar's brother-in-law, NTK Convenor Seeman among others.
“I unequivocally condemn the attack on Shankar's residence. Acts of violence, regardless of who the target is, are unacceptable and have no place in a democratic society. Our ideological positions are fundamentally different, and I stand in no agreement with his opinions or statements. However, remaining silent on such physical attacks would be unjust and irresponsible. I urge the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and concerned authorities to ensure appropriate action is taken and uphold the safety and security of all citizens, irrespective of their views,” Senthil posted on his social media.
Meanwhile, Shankar said that his YouTube channel, Savukku Media will be shutting its operations down.
