The 27-year-old’s exploits led Indian great Kapil Dev to describe him as “a genius with the bat”, while some commentators even went as far as drawing parallels with the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
Big-hitting Gayle said the form of Kohli, who is the highest scorer of players still in the tournament with 184 runs, was “no surprise” and jokingly urged him not to fire on all cylinders on Thursday. “I have said it over the years that he is going to be the world beater he is today,” Gayle told reporters.
“We are not going to focus on only Virat, there are so many match-winners there and anyone of them can actually fire on any particular day,” he said.
“It is very difficult to pinpoint one particular player in the Indian team. It is a very good all-round team, a good fielding team as well. “That’s why India are the favourites. It is always going to be difficult to beat them here. But like I said, West Indies are ready for an upset,” Gayle added.
The batsman said despite India having world class bowlers, he will play positively and according to the situation. “Dhoni is a very unpredictable captain. He might bring in (Ravichandran) Ashwin and might not also. But I am looking at what I can do and not focus on one single bowler. There are lot of bowlers who are bowling well.
Ashish Nehra is bowling well, with new ball. We just need to keep our eyes open, play according to the situation. Chris Gayle will always be positive, doesn’t matter which bowler is going to bowl,” he said.
Indian skipper M S Dhoni (right) with R Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah in a huddle New Zealand’s Leigh Kasperek (left) with Lea Tahuhu and Sara McGlashanWaqar’s apology very late say former captains KARACHI: Unimpressed by Pakistan cricket coach Waqar Younis’ public apology for the team’s disastrous World Twenty20, former captain Ramiz Raja and former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar have said it was a case of too little too late.
Akhtar, however, said he had been pained by the way Waqar had offered his apology yesterday before the media. “Waqar is one of our greats and it was painful to see him apologising. I don’t think anything will change by individuals apologising. A lot of things need to be set right in Pakistan cricket,” Akhtar told ‘ Geo News .’
Ramiz said on the same channel that even in the past, lot of people had been pardoned for failing to deliver good results. “The thing is no one is willing to face criticism or resign voluntarily. If the team had been producing good results the situation would have been different.
The sad part is that neither have we seen a change in performance nor the mindset. So the time has now come for changes,” he said.
