Muguruza converted all of her six break points to set up a meeting with either Russian 24th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or 2009 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova. After an early exchange of breaks, the 22-year-old Muguruza, a quarter-finalist at Roland Garros in the last two years, found her groove and won the last nine games on a sundrenched Court Philippe Chatrier.

She ended the world number 54’s ordeal with an exquisite backhand drop-shot on her first match point.

India’s Leander Paes and Marcin Matkowski of Poland made it to the third round of men’s doubles beating J Knowles (Austria) and F. Mayer (Germany) 6-4, 6-3. India’s Rohan Bopanna and F Mergea of Romania defeated G Barrare and Halys (France) 6-3, 6-4 to reach the third round.

Sixth seed Simona Halep of Romania reserved her best for the third set when she beat back the challenge of Naomi Osaka of Japan in a third round women’s singles third round match.

The sixth seed won 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 but the Japanese had given her a run for her money in the first set.

Osaka did well to hang in towards the end as she fought back to break the Romanian’s serve in the fifth game to pull back at 2-3  in the third set but gifted too many unforced points thereafter.

I Begu of Romania beat A Beck of Germany 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 in another third round match.
