Quality of football has improved: Lucio

A World Cup with Brazil in 2002, a treble with Inter in 2010 and a Confederations Cup in his kitty, Lucio has seen it all in international and club football. The defender replaced Robert Pires as the marquee player for FC Goa last season and guided his team to the summit clash where they faltered against Chennaiyin FC.

In an interaction, Lucio opened to DTNext on a variety of topics.

What prompted you to get back to FC Goa again?

I had a very good experience when I came here last year. We had a very good team, a great atmosphere and also had a great run of results. I was always appreciated wherever I went. It was a good experience generally. So when the chance came to come back, I decided to take it.

What is the improvement that you see in the standard of the league from last year?

You can see that the new players that are coming to the league are of a better quality year by year. Importantly, the Indian players are also improving significantly. They have been training with some good, experienced players for the past three years and that has helped them achieve what their potential merits. So the quality of the league had improved in general.

Do you have coaching ambitions and if yes, how and when do you plan to start?

Well, I still hope to be able to play at a high level for another two or three years. Post that, coaching is something that I would potentially consider. But it could be a different role as well. The certainty that I do have is that I want to continue in football. The rest we’ll take it as it comes along.

Who is the best coach you have worked under and why?

I have had the fortune of working with many good coaches in my career. But Jose Mourinho is someone who really stands out for me. He was someone who was really instrumental during my time at Inter and during the year we won the treble. He gave me a lot of useful advice and helped me with my game.

How has it been working under Zico? What is the best thing about Zico that makes you stay under him?

Zico is a good coach to play for. He is always very considerate and really takes care of his players. He has a clear philosophy for his style of play and always looks to go on the front foot which is something I enjoy as well. He playing an attaching brand of football and wants his players to work on that basis.
